It’s my favourite track by far. It’s probably the first track I visited as a child when I lived in Leicester, and it’s where Chirani Racing began back in 2002 at the Ron Haslam race school.
We got there on the Saturday because there was a track day available before Sundays race day. The practice went according to plan, my first outing since a snowy Silverstone, but good all the same. Our paint man Marc Andrews was there too on his Ducati 916. He was putting in some really quick lap times, we’ll get him racing soon!! My lass had a go on the bike as well, she had a great time. She wanted to go out with an instructor as she’d never ridden on my bike before let alone around a race track, but after two laps she’d gone past him thinking he was going too slow!!
I was ready to go on the Sunday, as I’d had a meal out with the family the night before for my birthday. Warm up went fine, and in the first 600 race I finished 34th. Oh well, not as bad as the first Open race, 37th. One consolation, plenty of bikes finished behind us, and everyone wants to ride at Donington, so the grids were full. Second 600 race finished 21st which was a lot better and I really enjoyed. 32nd in the second open race.
